The Secret to Losing 10 lbs. (In Photos)

I’m sure you’ve heard the adage “the camera put on 10 lbs.”. And to some extent it’s a true statement. If someone uses a wide-angle lens for a portrait or headshot, the distortion effect of such a lens can seem to make you look wider.

Also, if you’re sitting down when being photographed, it’s possible for you to look heavier than you actually are. Why? Gravity.

When you sit down, gravity compresses your body. Your spine, your neck, your shoulders, your stomach all come under the influence of gravity and you sink into yourself and the seat you’re in.

That’s why I shoot my headshots with people standing up and also having them stand tall and elongate their spine and neck. That will make your neck longer and a little thinner and tighten up the skin around your jaw. Try it in the mirror and see the results!

Make sure you ask any headshot photographer you’re interested in working with if they shoot headshots with clients in a seated or standing position. That will be a good indicator of whether or not they know how to loose the “10 lbs the camera adds”.
